Abstract:	Vietnamese wall tiles from Majapahit represent a unique opportunity for the study of inter-Asian trade. The tiles are a rare instance of a trade ceramic apparently produced for a single consumer. They can be firmly located in the context of the 15th century Vietnamese ceramic tradition, but their distinctive forms and certain designs set them apart as relating specifically to Javanese needs. This paper demonstrates that the Vietnamese tiles of Majapahit conform to the requirements of the decorative order evident in the temples of the later Hindu-Javanese period. The removal of many of these tiles from Majapahit to the mosques and minarets of the new Muslim cities of North central Java represents part of the process of cultural appropriation which characterized the establishment of the Sultanates of Java on the ruins of Majapahit.
