Abstract:	It is generally supposed that symbolic and/or artistic activity is one of the remarkable components of early modern human behavior. However, no clear archaeological evidence of such has thus far been found from the Pleistocene deposits of Southeast Asia. Here, I report discoveries of perforated artifacts, possibly used as personal ornaments, and stones with incised designs from terminal Pleistocene contexts at two Hoabinhian sites in northern Vietnam. These demonstrate that early modern humans in Southeast Asia also practiced symbolic behaviors as has been documented for populations in other regions of the world.
