| Abstract: | Recent advances in high-throughput DNA analysis have made huge data sets of genome diversity available for population studies. Whole-genome diversity data allow researchers to observe population structures and to discover the demographic history of human populations at an unprecedented resolution. In addition, such data are useful to construct a map of positive selection in the human genome by scanning for the signatures of selective sweeps. How and when did modern humans disperse into Asia? Did modern humans and archaic hominins interbreed in Asia? How did prehistoric migrations and admixtures occur within the Asia-Pacific region? How did modern humans genetically adapt to environments in Asia? These questions are becoming clarified in detail by using "population genomics." Here, introducing technical and theoretical advances in population genomics, I review studies on the history of migrations and adaptations in Asia and future tasks to be solved. |
