On sazigyo, Burmese manuscript binding tapes, non-verbal devices enhance the meaning of the woven text. Simple geometric motifs arranged in threes acquire symbolic significance: they symbolize the Three Gems, a text, an idea, and a system of morality. Geometric motifs composed of nine elements are the ancient <i>navratna</i> nine auspicious gems motif, standing for the Nine Planets and their powerful influences. Pictorial images are also loaded symbols. The stag symbolizes the Dhamma, the horse the Sangha. The Buddha is represented by a Bo-tree, umbrella, or stupa. Images of mythical and of real birds and beasts, bells, thrones and chariots, reflect the complex Burmese system of beliefs. Symbols of <i>dana</i> include the <padaythabin</i> and the offertory vessels <i>hsun-ok</i> and <i>kalat</i>. The donors may invoke both Thagya Min and the Earth Goddess Waythondaye (Vasundhara) to witness their deed of merit, the donation to a monastery of a manuscript with its sazigyo.
