Abstract:	When was the Mekong Delta actually a “well populated human habitat”? A widely accepted view among many archaeologists is that the Mekong Delta was already extensively occupied by about 500 BC. Since the high point of the mid-Holocene sea-level, the Mekong Delta has gradually expanded by sea regression and sedimentary discharge to its present size. This paper will discuss recent archaeological discoveries and the distribution of prehistoric sites in the Mekong Delta and their significance in understanding the progressive human conquest of this area.
