A coastal area of SE Thailand, Amphoe Tha Mai, Changwat Chanthaburi, was investigated using a combination of geomorphology, palynology, and 14C dating methods. The geomorphology is summarized as a map in Figure 1. Most of the landforms are marine in origin though extensive continental (structural, denudational and fluvial) types were also observed. Pollen analysis provided an accurate record of the entire Holocene transgression and enabled the area's landforms to be better correlated. Evidence indicating two sea level changes, dated at 16,200(+/-)1,320 yrs BP and 8,400(+/-)1,300 yrs BP, is presented. It is believed that the older date represents the beginning of the sea's regression during the last glacial event, Late Pleistocene, but might be somewhat younger. The younger age is the start of the Holocene transgression in SE Thailand. This integrated type of study has provided unique insights into this area's recent history. It is recommended that future work of this type would be an efficient and accurate way of investigating a given area's past history.
