Abstract:	In the interpretation of history, the reading of meaning of the abundant artefacts in Southeast Asia has generally taken second place to the tangible literary documents which verify the legends and lore of a given culture. While methods of excavation and documentation of artefacts have advanced greatly in more recent years, the methods of interpretations based on the artefacts themselves, methods which link archaeology to historical and cultural studies and especially those dealing with history of art and architecture, are embroiled in theoretical and practical dilemmas. This paper looks at possible facets of a methodology for giving the interpretation of the artefact itself a greater role in the interpretation of cultural remains.
