Abstract:	Scholars have generally cited objective and multidisciplinary criteria to support the theory that a major change took place in Khmer history in the early ninth century. This paper demonstrates on the basis of inscriptional evidence that the ancient Khmer also thought of the early ninth century, especially the year of the accension of Jayavarman II, as a time of transition. It is suggested that this idea has been preserved in the collective memory of the Khmer up to today.
