This paper presents the results of recent archaeological work in Pugang Raharjo, province of Lampung, Sumatra, in an interim report on field survey work and the excavation at the Kemiling site. The excavation has yielded rich assemblages of glass beads, with ceramics and an inscription dated 1354 A.D. The field survey in Pugung Raharjo and surroundings is also rich in evidence relating to the megalithic and Hindu-Buddhist cultures. In Pugung Raharjo, two statues were found on a site where there was previously a megalithic sanctuary. One is in the so-called Polynesian style but has characteristics similar to a Hindu or Buddhist cult statues, and the other one looks as if it was meant to be a statue in Singasari style. In Bungkuk, 8 km from Pugung Raharjo, a late 7th century inscription from Sriwijaya was found. The evidence from Pugung Raharjo and surrounding areas therefore suggest that this site has produced a cultural sequence extending from the megalithic culture to the Hindu-Buddhist culture.
