Abstract:	Excavation in 1998-2003 at the walled site of Tagaung in northern Myanmar highlight sustained inter-regional exchange linking the late prehistoric to the formation of pre-state Buddhist polities by the late first millennium AD. The evidence supports the site's long chronology recorded in chronicles but also underlines a need to update ethno-linguistic typologies of Myanmar's early Buddhist cultures with the growing body of archaeological data. The article thus draws in archaeology, chronicles and historiography in assessing the significance of Tagaung.
