| Abstract: |
Chemical characteristics of pottery clay pastes and inclusions can be used to identify 'production, exchange and consumption patterns' (Summerhayes, 1996). A chemical analysis of 23 sherds from Gilimanuk using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that all pottery came from one clay source, while both a chemical analysis and a macroscopic analysis of the inclusions identified two sources of sand (i.e. volcanically derived). A possible source of high kaolinite content is available at the foot of Gunung Kelatakan, about 15km from the site. In this regard, while the calcareous beach sand filler was available in Gilimanuk, it is quite possible that the uniform clay paste was obtained from location.
|
