Abstract:	Two opposing sets of views have emerged for the skeletal remains from the cave of Liang Bua in Flores, Indonesia: that they represent a new hominid species, <i>H. floresiensis</i>, or that Liang Bua 1 (LB1), at least, was a modern human afflicted with a pathological condition. These conflicting hypotheses are based upon morphological comparisons and/or morphometric analyses. Argue et al. (2006) tested these hypotheses and determined that <i>H. floresiensis</i> represents a new species. This paper tests this using a different process: cladistic analysis.
