Abstract:	<p>Brown et al. (2004) quickly attributed the hominid skeletal remains and artifacts they discovered in September 2003 at Liang Bua Cave on Flores Island, eastern Indonesia, to a new species, <i>Homo floresiensis</i>. Soon thereafter some paleoanthropologists argued the that the type specimen (LB1) is a pathological individual of <i>Homo sapiens</i> or <i>Homo erectus</i>. With a view toward assessing conflicting interpretations of (LB1), I review the cases of select Neanderthal and earlier notable fossil hominid specimens (AL-288-1, KNM-WT 15000, Laetoli hominid footprints) that evidence pathology and the extent to which pathological traits affected their taxonomic assignments and scenarios of their behavior and places in hominid phylogenies.</p>
