Abstract:	Humor can lead to a meeting of minds. A most unlikely encounter with Otto von Bismarck is an occasion to discuss how Pacific Prehistory is history in its own right, why Lapita was probably not a single phenomenon, and why it is useful to think Lapita was not simply a cultural complex but a mosaic of Oceanic cultural traits, each with its own history, its own geographic distribution, and its own temporal duration.
