Abstract:	The test excavation at the Nong Kwang site was undertaken as part of the writer's PhD project which mainly focuses on social development during the transitional period from the Iron Age to the emergence of the early state in the West-Central region of Thailand. Two areas were studied, one in U-Thong district, Suphanburi Province, the other in Chom Bueng district, Ratchaburi Province. These two sub-regions differ not only in physical geography, but it is argued that some characteristics of their early culture are also distinguishable.
