3 commonalities generally among hunter-gatherers: 1) many humid-tropics foragers operate in environments rich in animal protein resources 2) wild plant food resources, such as carbohydrate staples, are less abundant and present serious envrionmental limitations to forager growth. In other words, unlike the arid tropics, the humid topics may be game rich and plant-food poor (Griffin et al n.d.a.
Hutterer 1982, 1983) 3) modern foraging is not limited to collection of wild resources
it often includes incipient horticulture and exchange with non-foraging peoples within or adjacent to the foragers' own collection ranges 4) if game rich AND rich-food poor, a h-g strategy may be fine only for very low population densities
