| Abstract: |
In 1993 Glover and Yamagata excavated at Tra Kieu in Central Vietnam, a site identified from the 6th century AD as Simhapura, capital of the Cham state of Amaravati. The excavation provided a sequence of ceramics which extend back to the late centuries of the pre-Christian era. As well as the locally produced earthen wares, there are ceramic forms and decoration which exhibit Han Chinese and Indian influences. This paper presents some initial results from the petrographic analysis of the Chinese style stamped wares from Tra Kieu and similar ceramics produced at the Tam Tho kilns in northern Vietnam. It also examines a different method for studying ceramic fabrics in the field.
