Abstract:	The subject has been controversial. If the word prāsād, or Prasat is straightforward, interpretation of names such as Banteay, Kuk Phnom etc given to Khmer temples can be misleading since they can mean fortress, barracks, jail, hill or mountain which do not seem appropriate for sacred places. To resolve these problems a structural approach is needed together with a large survey of ancient texts and popular literature.
