Abstract:	Resins and other plant exudates such as gums and latexes have long been important materials used and traded by Southeast Asian peoples. The forests there include hundreds of resiniferous species distributed among nine plant families. Many resin specimens have also been found in local archaeological sites. This paper presents preliminary results of the analysis of over 100 botanically identified resins from Southeast Asian, mainly Peninsular Malaysian, forests along with archaeological resins and adhesives and coatings from ethnographic objects using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). A cluster analysis based on a comparison of peak distributions using coefficients of similarity was also developed.
