By analysing a "calling of the souls" rite held for a new baby, this paper demonstrates that, far from being perceived as an obstacle, the heterogeneity of Lao beliefs and healing practices facilitates communication between social partners. Just like linguists who have perfectly mastered several languages, these partners select, as required, symbolic resources that are derived from Buddhism, Indo-Khmer civilisation, or from the local substrate, to give a sense of direction to the healing act and to the sick person.
