| Abstract: | What are the social, ethic and economic components of the new Hmong market which appeared spontaneaously in Luang Prabang in the 1990s? How does a mainly farming rural community gradually shift to producing and selling handicrafts to tourists in an urban environment? How were networks for supplying raw materials and finished products set up? Which economic and social consequences follow these new activities? These are the main issues addressed in this paper, which also enriches the description of South East Asia's ethnic groups through overcoming the conventional images of slash and burn farmers and of 'semi-shifting' communities. Analysing the situation of the Luang Prabang ethnic market provides an opportunity to demonstrate how rural farming communities have organised an independent cottage industry that produces and directly sells handicrafts. |
