| Abstract: | This article belongs to a series of papers by this writer on the history of Chiang Khaeng. In 1896 the eastern part of Chiang Khaeng, including its capital Müang Sing, became a part of French Indochina. This paper analyses the transformation of the society and political structure of Müang Sing during the early years of French rule, then discusses in detail the responses of the ruling elite to the establishment of a French protectorate. The formative period of Müang Sing ended in late 1914 with the flight of the principality's last ruler to Chiang Rung, and the subsequent dismantling of Müang Sing as an autonomous polity. |
