Abstract:	This contribution presents the main results of missions carried out between 1991 and 1990 at Vat Phu (Champassak Province), within the framework of a French-Lao archaeological project. At this site are found various types of monuments, the most significant vestiges of which originate from the 5th to the 13th centuries AD. The complexity and the age of the site has been reconfirmed by exceptional discoveries concerning the structures which connect the original sanctuary to the sacred mountain, the lay out of the ancient town, and the location of nearby temples on the route to Angkor. This information significantly alters our approach to regional history in the first millennium, confirming the identification of the whole Vat Phu site as the first capital of the Khmer kingdom of Chenla.
