Abstract: Traditionally people believed that there was only one center of origin for metallurgy in the world and, therefore, that the emergence of Chinese metallurgy was the result of diffusion from outside. Based on historical literature and the history of technology, the author argues that this technological invention may have occured in several places in the world. Chinese metallurgy was a native invention, probably evolving from multiple centers.
