Abstract: Quiros' discovery of what he thought was the continent of La Austrialia del Espiritu Santo in 1606 and his attempted settlement at 'New Jerusalem' in Big Bay, Santo in Vanuatu will be investigated in a planned archaeological and historical project, linking Australian, Spanish, and Latin American researchers, to be completed in time for the 400th anniversary of the naming of Austrialia (or was it Australia?). The wider project of which this is a part takes a new look at culture contact in the Western Pacific region from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century.
