Abstract: This article examines the legitimation of power in two polyethnic traditional kingdoms of Laos. Two usurping Thai dynasties have both used ritual and kinship modes of expression to buttress their dominance. This is achieved by a transference of traditional authority from the conquered chiefs to the ruling Thai kings
the overt representations of this process have turned out quite differently in the two kingdoms. This difference in political articulation is discussed for the kingdoms of Luang Prabang, and Bassac.
