The Brunei Museum was established in 1965. The permanent building at Kota Batu was completed in December 1970 and officially opened on 29 February 1972 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Archaeology section has existed since the inception of the museum and is involved with the archaeology of the entire country and particularly of the continuing excavations at Kota Batu. The Brunei Museum serves as a repository for objects, especially ceramics, collected from both archaeological excavations at historical sites and rescue excavations on sites threatened by construction. Ceramics are a sensitive indicator of change and continuity in the technology, economy, religion, and social structure of Brunei Darussalam. Ceramics are a primary source of archaeological data for the study of the culture of Brunei Darussalam because they are durable and abundant and help to gain insight into the lives of the ancient inhabitants, and to develop a chronological perspective.
