Title: Survival strategy of diatom species living on now-depositing non-glacial varves
Date: 2004
Source: Quaternary International
Abstract: A freshwater diatom species, Aulacoseira subarctica, occurred dominantly from obviously laminated sections of varved sediment taken from Lake Suigetsu, central Japan. Sequential changes in diatom flora suggest only the species survived artificial environmental changes causing seawater invasion and strengthened stratification in water column since 17th century. A probable reason to explain its survival is that the diatom took resting strategy to resist anaerobic bottom water during unfavorable seasons.
