Abstract: Being an organic and important part of the Institute of Archaeology, the Department of Metal Age Study, founded at the same time with the foundation of the Institute is obliged to study the important period of history-time of joundation of nation and state. In the early years, the department concentrated on the study of the Hung King and An Duong King Periods, with a lot of important discoveries, essays and workshops. Since 1975, the fieldwork has been extended all over the country, there have been important discoveries of Sa Huynh culture in Long Thach, Binh Chau (Quang Ngai prov.) and those of the Dong Nai culture in Cau Sat, Doc Chua... Currently, the department have been trying to study the three strategic regions: Truong Sa, Tay Nguyen and the plain of the Mekong River.
