Since the mid-1980s, archaeological site stabilization and preservation has advanced in terms of ethical standards, codes of practice, use of conservation concepts and processes borrowed from other disciplines and in the publication of results. Ecologically appropriate (and therefore cost-effective) methods of stabilisation for earthwork sites have been developed. Issues encompass timing and process of intervention, monitoring, the cost-effectiveness and long-term reliability of conservation technology (especially when compared with the cost of rescue archaeology funded by developers), divergent values of archaeological sites and hence differing management responses, and training.
