Abstract:	Over the last decade field-based research in the north-west of Western Australia has expanded our knowledge of prehistoric coastal landuse in the region. Although large stratified and mounded shell middens do occur in areas of the northwest there appear to be major differences in the form and distribution of middens on the eastern and western seaboards of Australia. The paper describes new evidence from northwestern Australia and examines patterns of coastal exploitation and the land-scapes in which shell middens are found.
