Abstract: The site of Muang Phet in northeast Thailand was first excavated in the 1950's by H. G. Quaritch Wales. He concluded that the site was founded in the 7th to 9th centuries AD as a result of Dvaravati occupation. The later phase of the site he interpreted as 10th to 13th century Khmer occupation. Recent archaeological surveys and a new excavation of the site indicate that it was founded earlier and abandoned earlier than Wales suspected.
