Abstract:	This paper discusses common elements of material culture in eastern India (particularly Bengal) and central Thailand during the early centuries of the Christian era. It continues to discuss the nature of maritime contacts between eastern India and Mainland Southeast Asia. Indigenous developments of social complexity in both Bengal and Mainland Southeast Asia, stimulated by trade but prior to the spread of Indic religions and forms of kingship, are indicated by current data.
