Abstract:	The Mekong delta housed some of the earliest complex polities in Southeast Asia during the early historic period (and 400 BC - AD 500). Key transformations that occurred during this transition to history are discussed in the context of the Mekong Delta. Previous scholars have commonly assumed that the Cambodian site of Angkor Borei in Takeo Province was a capital of an early complex polity known as "Funan." This article presents preliminary results of field investigations (mapping, reconnaissance, excavations, geoarchaeology) at the site of Angkor Borei, by the Lower Mekong Archaeological Project. It also discusses some implications of these findings for understanding emergent complexity in Mainland Southeast Asia.
