Abstract:	Knowledge of the Khmer state has, in the past, been based on historical data and on the study of the major temple complexes. This paper suggests approaches to a more comprehensive archaeological study of the organisation of the Khmer state and the structure of society within it. The approach is based on archaeological survey work in the Phimai region of northeast Thailand.
