Abstract:	Variable concentrations of trace elements in human skeletons are used to reconstruct major components in the diet of two New World prehistoric cultures: the middle-range Dallas chiefdom of Tennessee and the advanced chiefdom/state of the Maya of Copan, Honduras. Social class distinctions, as measured by burial location and grave furniture, correlate with dietary differences in both cultures. Other archeological indicators of status-specific dietary patterns in the Dallas area support the conclusions reached through trace element research.
