Discusses the unviersal vulnerability of infant and children to mortality and the techniques used with skeletal material that are sensitive indicators of the health of the population. They discuss/propose and particular model that was first addressed in Goodman et al (1984) the states that environment is the source of both the resource necessary for survival and the stressors that are adversely affecting adaptation. Culture mediates the process of extracting the necessary material from the environment thourgh its technological, social and ideological systems. Culture can also act to buffer the individual and population stressors. Evidence of stress includes Harris lines, Enamel hypoplasia, Porotic hyperostosis, life expectancy.
