Title: Biological lineages, skeletal populations, and microevolution

Abstract: Read this several times I believe what he's saying is that compariing ancient remains and modern samples are of little value since they are not part of the same population (deme). As a result then, comparing skeletal samples with great time depth would be like comparing red apples with green apples. They may be lo similar but they are totally different. I will read it more and see if I am still understanding it the same. pg 194 Living humans are neither uniformly nor randomly distributed through space, but exist in clusters, which begin to approximate populations. pg 196 Since in most cases the sample includes individuals which were never simultaneously alice and, therefore, had zero probability of mating, the collection of individuals represented by the sample could not have been a population by definition. Human remains from archaeological sites may represent a biased portion of the population from which they were drawn, since, after all, they are cumulative aggregates usually multiple generations of individuals and not biological populations. pg 196 A \bskeletal sample\b is asample of a temporally ordered sequence of populations, presumably with genetic continuity, and this is the definition of a population lineage. p 197 A\b lineage\b is a collection of temporally sequenced populations with genetic continuity. pg 196-197 If an aggregation of individuals is to be used to document micorevolutionary changes or the processes which cause them, then it should be a sample of an evolutionary unit, not an artibrary collection. While it is near impossible to obtain a truly representative prehistoric sample, it is reasonable however that the unit sampled at least be one within which the evolutionary processes can potentially operate and which has some continuity though time. This is why a population, gene pool, is spen of as such a unit, and the family, for example, is not. pg 197 A lineage cannot be an evolutionary unit, but rather is a complex or many such units which are the result of evolutionary processes and upon whihc evolution processes already have operated.
