Abstract: This paper deals with some interim results from an archaeological excavation carried out at the Xom Oc site on Ly Son Island, Quang Ngai Province, Central Vietnam. The site has an undisturbed stratigraphy, 1.1 to 1.5 metres in depth, formed of sand, soil and seashells. The objects found in Xom Oc, especially the pottery, indicate that it belongs to the Sa Huynh culture. However, there are hundreds of tools made of Tridacna and Turbo shell, suggesting that Xom Oc shard characteristics with Xom Con, an earlier culture distributed along the coast of Central Vietnam. As well as the evidence of settlement, a grave of two adults with rich burial gifts and the burial of an infant in a jar were also discovered. A date of 3000-2000 BP is proposed for the general dating of Xom Oc, from the early to the late phase of the Sa Huynh culture.
