Abstract:	The Indo-Pacific region exhibits the greatest language diversity of any comparable region in the world. Including major languages such as Chinese and Hindi, it is also the location of a great many isolates, suggesting long periods of diversification in relative isolation. The paper gives an overview of recent scholarship on the language phyla of the region, paying particular attention to classification issues.
