This study analyzes physical and chemical variability within the ceramic assemblages at Angkor Borei, Cambodia from the late prehistoric into the early historic period (c. 500 BCECE 500). Angkor Borei was a major center during this period of increasing socio-political complexity leading to the emergence of the regions earliest states. Chemical compositional and morphological analyses provide a broadly technological characterization of the sites ceramics, used to interpret dimensions of variability and continuity in technical choices during the manufacture of these wares. Results enhance archaeological perspectives on the extent to which ceramic producers at this important center were participating in developing regional interaction spheres, while also recognizing the persistence of local traditions and likely cases of emulation and innovation. This study provides a baseline for several productive directions for future investigations, including geographically expanded compositional analyses and additional comparative studies of earthenware ceramic technologies in the region.
