Abstract:	The study of early contacts between the Classical world and the east along the Maritime Silk Road can be considered a relatively popular field of research. However, most studies concentrated on the Roman period were Western-centered. This paper illustrates different levels of interactions between the Mediterranean world, South Asia, Southeast Asia and China during the 1st millennium BC and early centuries AD based on a range of evidence. Some are well-known but have been reinterpreted thanks to new analytical techniques or approaches, others come from recent excavations. The global framework provides a decentered perspective on ancient connectivity integrating local responses into broader constructions focusing in this study on the period when the Maritime Silk Road arose.
