Abstract:	Are museums foreign implants in Southeast Asia? This chapter will attempt to answer this question by examining the development of local private museums in southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra, Indonesia. These areas are marked by considerable cultural diversity. Local groups are using the medium of the museum to try to portray and preserve aspects of their culture in the face of competition from other forms of identity.
