From 2004, the Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute of Archaeology, which managed the archaeological site before returning it to the Hanoi city authorities in 2011, benefitted from the technical expertise of several countries as well as UNESCO. This book cannot hope to account for all the Vietnamese and international projects that have contributed to the site’s conservation and development. As part of the EFEO’s contribution, however, a team of experts visited the site in August 2004 and submitted a number of recommendations. In addition to offering technical expertise to the Institute of Archaeology, notably for the on-site museum named ‘One Thousand Years from Under the Ground’ that opened in 2010, the EFEO hoped to contribute to the documentation of the discovery. This volume originated from that hope.
