In December 2002, staff of the Institute of Archaeology and several hundred workers opened the first trench in the most important excavation in the history of Vietnamese archaeology, the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel site at 18 Hoàng Diệu Street, Hanoi. By March 2004, after nearly a year and a half of intense, enthusiastic and unceasing labour conducted in a spirit of great responsibility towards the nation’s history, a vast quantity of artefacts and the vestiges of several dozen palaces were brought to light. They were greeted with great passion by researchers in many disciplines. The discovery inspired today’s generation of Vietnamese, filling them with national pride. A whole series of questions was raised by the discovery. What was this place? How do the architectural vestiges and artefacts discovered here increase our knowledge of the nation’s history?
