Abstract: This research focuses on the Ira Ara site in Timor-Leste, a significant archaeological find featuring a fortified settlement and burial complex. The paper discusses the site's contribution to understanding post-AD 1000 fortified settlements in the region, the implications of these structures on contemporary Timorese identity and land tenure, and the historical context related to social conflict in Timor-Leste. Additionally, the study evaluates existing models of initial fortification and presents radiocarbon and luminescence dating results for various materials found at the site.
