Abstract:	Too few scholars of Southeast Asia produce books designed to appeal to a general audience. One reason may be that it is difficult to present complicated subjects to the public in a way that makes them interesting without compromising academic integrity by oversimplification. A second reason why such books are not common stems from the reluctance of publishers to sponsor them, usually in the belief that book buyers will not pay for works which make demands on their attention or vocabulary. The work under review is a fortunate exception to this situation, and should be of interest to both scholars and interested lay people. The book is attractively designed, presented in a large format (30.5 x 21.5 cm) on good quality paper, with a nice typeface, good graphics, and clear reproductions of photographs and drawings.
