Abstract:	Archaeology indicates that Asia has undergone long cycles of transformation and incorporation of regions which have maintained distinct identities, rather than triumphant absorption of minority cultures by dominant majorities. Such a perspective furnishes an interesting counterpoint to the general trend of nationalist historical narratives. This book displays a clear-eyed awareness of the gulf between disinterested scholarship and the forces which have shaped archaeological discourse. The authors give genuine reason to hope that this gulf may become narrower in future.
