I highly recommend this publication to anyone interested in maritime archeology in Southeast Asia, the maritime Silk routes―past and present―, museums and the display of shipwrecks, the management and preservation of cultural heritage, and the myriad inter-sections between all of the above. The questions raised by the Belitung wreck are multi-faceted and necessitate careful consideration and honest, open debate. As Pearson’s book has articulately shown, the wreck’s many stories, be they controversial or celebratory, historical or contemporary, political or poetic, deserve to be told, not silenced.
