Abstract: This chapter discusses some issues that strongly affect our reading of the data presented in chapters 3 and 4 and that therefore necessarily shape the arguments developed later in the book. In particular, we consider several important methodological and interpretive problem areas that are useful to bear in mind as we survey the available empirical evidence from Island Southeast Asia (ISEA) and the Mediterranean in those chapters.
